DAY 27 - CIVITELLA to CAPOSELVI - 17 May 2026

The main square of Civitella this morning was a colourful carpet of crocheted rugs. A charity does this to raise awareness of and funds for cancer.  Even St Francis looked cosy!

On the advice of a cheese maker at today's cheese market,  we bought a piece of pecorino, aged with a purple coat of vernaccia grape. Its name translates to 'drunkard's cheese' and it is truly delicious!

On leaving Civitella, we followed a steeply descending track through the forest. This joined with a quiet road,  which would have been quieter still if not for The Grand Tour 2026 for Classic Cars, from Pisa to Rimini, Florence and Perugia. We also shared the road with a number of cyclists.

We ate some of our cheese on a convenient wall before joining a road that took us into a bar.  Fiorentina versus Juventus was live on the big screen and there were some enthusiastic supporters. The locals were happy when Fiorentina scored just as we were leaving.

We were then on the road for a bit longer until we found an almost deserted holiday village,  with restaurant.  The two bored staff members were delighted to see us and we ate well there.

After another stint on the road we turned off onto a tranquil dirt track.  We followed a series of these tracks and roads through olive trees and vineyards. On the way we passed a couple of memorial signboards to civilians shot in WWII.  Finally we arrived at our accommodation for the night,  an agriturismo that produces both olive oil and wine!

There were some other road users apart from classic cars and Australian long-distance walkers
And some lovely scenery to enjoy as we continued on our way
Traditional ceremonial selfie to mark the 500km mark of our trip
Some delicious cheese for morning tea
We joined the locals in watching a football game during our coffee stop in Badia Agnano
Lunch at a nearly deserted holiday village in Capannole
A bit more road-walking
Then we were on country tracks for the rest of the way
