We started the day with a treasure hunt, looking for contrada emblems and fountains. Children born in a contrada are baptised with water from their special contrada fountain.
Workers were laying sand in the Piazza del Campo in preparation for next week's Palio (horse race). Luckily we were able to cross before the Piazza was sealed off.
After breakfast, we visited the cathedral complex. In the cathedral there were stunning marble floors and a pulpit that looked a bit like a merry-go-round. The Piccolomini Library had colourful frescoes and illuminated books. In the cathedral museum we saw treasures such as a golden rose. We climbed a narrow spiral staircase to get an amazing 360-degree view. As the crypt had been forgotten and sealed off for nearly 700 years, the 12th and 13th century frescoes remained vibrant. In the baptistery, we had to sit down to take in the highly decorated walls and ceiling.
We completed some errands, had a pasta lunch then returned to our accommodation for planning and rest.
