DAY 76 - VETRALLA to SUTRI - 5 July 2026

On the way out of Vetralla we found the biggest mural on the Via Francigena. There were lots of people out exercising, and a few of us had to wait at the railway crossing for the train to go past - again!

We walked through a large forest,  with well-used trails.  We walked through hazelnut fields,  and found three towers legend says were built by Roland, a general of Charlemagne (historians dispute this). We also saw the four Italian pilgrims from yesterday. We photographed the towers and had a chat to the pilgrims, who are doing the same stages as us.

We had lunch at Capranica, pasta and salad. We walked through the old town,  finding murals and flowers and fountains to refill our bottles. At the bottom of the hill we restocked at the supermarket and dunked our hats in the spring.

After a big uphill we headed down into forest, following a path beside a little stream.  There were rickety bridges to cross. There were also picnic tables but we had an amphitheatre to see which closed soon...

We passed Etruscan necropoli cut into the hillside before arriving at the amphitheatre.  This one is different because it is cut directly into the tufa. Walkers on the Via Francigena get a stamp and a discount on the entry price.

After a rest at our accommodation,  we explored the historic centre of Sutri before a fish dinner.
